Auburn Riverside High School has a variety of sports, including wrestling, basketball, girls volleyball, golf, and so much more. Even if you don’t want to join any sports you can show up to the games and support your school.
Auburn Riverside has many different ways of honoring different student athletes and sports.
“I don’t think any sport deserves more recognition than another, but I try to find ways to honor all kids that do sports,” said Kyle Jones, the athletic director at Auburn Riverside. “We have athletes of the week and we balance it so we have multiple kids that can get recognized. We are gonna start doing a raven spotlight of athletes. I want to represent everybody that plays sports.”
Athlete of the week is when one athlete, it doesn’t matter what team they are on or what grade they are in, is picked to be athlete of the week and to be honored.
ASB at ARHS has ways of getting more people to attend the games.
Cora Lowe, a senior at Auburn Riverside and a part of ASB, said members are not required to attend every game but it gives them points for attending games.
“I enjoy going to games a lot, I just enjoy sports in general to be honest,” Cora added.
Athletes also like when people come and support their games.
Jaiden Drinker, a freshman, plays on the Auburn Riverside football team and is on JV and is a varsity swing. Jaiden says this about what it’s like playing for the football team, “Right now it’s a building process for us because we don’t have a strong bond with each other. Once we get that organized we will be good.”
Jaiden likes when people show up and show their support during football games, and he especially enjoys when his family comes to the games.
“I like when the school cheers us on, it helps us play better.”
Students also love to come and support their classmates in games.
Sarija Vanderpol, a sophomore who goes by Sj, loves attending Auburn Riverside sport games. She especially enjoys going to volleyball games because “they are good, and it’s very eventful.”
Sj’s favorite game theme to dress up for is all black because she thinks it’s very versatile.
Joining sports also has a lot of benefits.
“People should join sports because it builds friendships and communities for people and gives life skills, leadership, and it helps keep your body in shape, and sports also help you mentally,’ Jaiden added.
