In the goal of academic excellence, students are increasingly aware of the pivotal role that consistent attendance plays in their educational success. By showing up regularly not only fosters a disciplined approach to learning but also enhances students’ understanding and retention of course material,
“Our data shows the importance of attendance; It directly correlates to the rate of graduation.” said Ben Barta, Dean of Student Academics.
When considering a variety of influences that impact students’ ability to maintain consistent school attendance, Barta states, “I think it is hard. People get sick, people have issues, injuries, circumstances, and mental health is a big thing now with the prevalence of social media and cell phone use; it is not an easy thing to have perfect attendance.”
Barta adds, “I believe it’s a worthwhile thing to work towards the goal of and build the skill sets for over time to eventually see improvement”
As students aim for perfection, they recognize that being present is the first step towards achieving academic goals.
Junior Leila Harris says, “I believe if you lack good attendance, you’re gonna lack good grades and shortly you’ll start missing information that you need to pass the test”
Leila adds that bad attendance “affects the longevity of our performance because the more school you miss, the more you feel the urge to miss more.”
“The importance of attendance is showing up and being present to class on time” Junior Affan said.
Many believe perfect attendance can be equated with the development of strong soft skills for future opportunities,
“I think that maintaining attendance is similar to real-world practices because jobs have expectations for you to show up and be there on time, schools that are training us to do that,” said senior Emily Abney.
Freshman Fernanda Hernandez added, “Attendance is crucial because it’s a lifelong skill to show up and be present.”
